Soungle is a must have bookmark for any DJ, musician or music freak out there. It is a search engine that lets you search for free sound FX and musical instrument samples from their huge database. It lets you search, preview and download them. Soungle is not an audio sound search engine, it only searches one huge constantly growing database.

Although it might sound weird to search for sound FX using text, it does work well. Searches are keyword based and upto 10 results are displayed per page. Every search result shows a play icon which previews that particular search result. The download button instantly starts downloading the sound effect. Each search result is accompanied by some details such as short description, frame rate, duration and bit rate.

Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings.

It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Bass Boost, Wahwah, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST plug-in effects

YouconvertIt is a web service that lets you convert almost anything digital to any other formats for free without the need to install additional software.. It lets you upload audio, video, image, or document files and convert from one format to another. Just select the file from your computer to upload, select your target format, and the web service will send you an e-mail when your new file is ready to download.

The website has a dead simple interface that uses AJAX, making the service fast and easy to use. Currently the service supports up to 5 files for conversion and sending. And the conversion limit is up 300 MB size while file sending limit is up to 1 GB.  This makes youconvertit convenient for light file conversions use. However the service is an indication into how the Internet based apps are replacing traditional PC based software.

Soundsnap is an online resource that promises to share “pro-quality” sounds, samples and loops with the world of audio experimentalists and songsmiths without any cost to the end user. Yes, royalty-free, non-exclusive, sublicense-transferable and high-fidelity recordings are what the site is advertising, and having given it a good once-over, I’ve concluded that for those of you out there who like to dabble and like to assemble lots of little things into larger, interesting things, the site is a real pleasure to use.

With an archive of some 30,000+ audio clips, ranging in length from seconds to minutes, the volume of material that you can piece together and mold at will is fairly immense. Big enough for spark some new ideas, for sure. What’s more, the library presented by Soundsnap is almost entirely user generated and user supplied. Only at its very start did the site require the investment of time and talent by a number of sound designers and producers to get things rolling.
